Salazar’s prize
Wednesday, July 25th, 2007
Salazar and his wife line up
with hopeful hearts, owned by a dream
dreamt by thirty thousand others
offered by a gameshow’s prizes
He waits with her, amongst a crowd
fairly anxious, still determined
tired and hungry, tempers rising
a stampede! Death toll: eighty-eight
Now, Salazar wails for his wife
cursing himself and poverty
he mourns for dreams pinioned in blood
his prize: a knife pierced through his heart

Inspired by an actual tragedy. A sad, but truthful account of reality.
