The Things I Did In This Lifetime

The Things I Did In This LifetimeThe walks in the rain and storm
Just listening and learning
Touching lives, in a manner
Mere words fail to describe

Discovering nature’s wonders
In plain sight for all to see
Rising from the rubbles
Of troubles and uncertainty

The meeting with ordinary folks
With extraordinary tales
Feeling their pain, their joy
Keeping it in one’s memory

Being able to share one’s gift
Being blessed beyond compare
These, I know and more are
Dreams, in reality fulfilled

As I write, am lost

As I write, am lost

mixing phrases in a pinch
gilded in gold, inch by inch
brewing bottles of potions
mirrors of thoughts and notions

casting pearls, chasing shadows
with cupid’s own winged arrows
held fast, pure, by twilight’s youth
grains of wisdom, leis of truth

bemused, stuck, battling a wall
taming monsters, ten feet tall
handcuffed by noisy chatter
dancing with old grey matter

sifting thoughts, dark brew sipping
tossing words, pebble skipping
eyes on the noose, hung up high
as another day goes by

lost perhaps, still hard-wired
in poetry, inspired

Baking Zeb’s Bread

Baking Zeb’s BreadNo wheat or barley or oats
No eggs or potatoes in any form
Avoid the nuts altogether
Use rice, bean, sorghum, tapioca

Try one mixture after the next
Compare the texture and the taste
Discover the versatility of
Arrowroot, flax meal and soda

Sift and measure, make a list
Keep the ones that seem to work
Mix one batch, try another
Discard those failed attempts

Again and again, over and over
A new mixture to mix and test
Until one that works is found
Obsessed with baking Zeb’s bread

First Snow

First Snow

My love beckons:
“Come with me and see.”
So, I look out,
face against the glass.

White powder drops…
dressing up the grass.
Silently it calls out,
to stir a yearning in me.

Slowly, I unhook the latch
opening the window wide…
I stretch my arm out,
flakes melt in my hand.

I close the window,
And I am warm again.
What a wonder,
…to feel my first snow.

Far from home

In
silence
choking back
poignant sadness
as I sit alone
so far away from home.
I miss the lighthearted mood
brought on by food and my kinfolks.
Nothing says Thanksgiving more clearly
than the warmth of one’s family and home.

Yldara/M. Stanphill

*** Just thinking of those who are far from their loved ones, those that miss their loved ones —May your hearts be filled with joy, hope, love, peace and thanksgiving, all through out the year.

Shelved

shelved.jpgStep one, started easy enough
Open the box. Lay out the boards
Make sure you have all the screws
Then simply follow the rules

Unfortunately the holes
Seem not to match up
A few screws got broken
And the boards cracked apart

It took a full day
Instead of two hours
The bookshelf stands empty
Not worth the saved dollars

Author’s Comments:

Ever heard of the saying, “You get what you paid for” ? This light humor type of a poem certainly has the trappings of one such dilemma. Sometimes, penny pinching does have its rather frustrating effects. One could argue that it can be likened to one’s walk of faith. When a person shortcuts his way around life and settles for the bargains and easy assembly type of beliefs—guess what? You reap the benefits of it also.

To walk in Christ’s footsteps is not an easy task. I would venture to say that there are no shortcuts to it. No, it is not an easy path to take. In fact, it is my understanding that persecution, is always there to hound those that believe and walk in the Light. Still, you cannot let this get you down. Just keep remembering that your hope is in the Lord and your salvation in His merciful and just hands.

When we make mistakes, we pay for it (especially in our bargain-hunting purchases—LOL) but thank the good Lord for hope, forgiveness and a sense of humor.

Grandfather’s Chest

Worn leather straps and painted varnish
aged wood and yellowed liners inside
treasured mementos of the past kept
dust-free, among an array of pipes
and cigars. All, treasured pieces

 Grandfather’s Chest

Wish one could still search through
that chest like before. It is now gone
No one quite understood why -
just like when mom came home and said:
“Grandpa is now at peace; in Heaven rests.”

Gift and Witness

Gift and Witness

The clink of your coin in a tin cup
was all that bore witness to a gift
just a moment caught in time, impressed
in the heart of a blind street beggar

After the Summer Sun Hides

After the Summer Sun HidesMoon, you shine a silver gazed orb
in an August sky. Stars absorb
in silence, how mortals’ weep; sighs
for you: white witch of darkened skies.

In your arms, of shadows and light,
summer fairies dance in delight,
while lovers bloom and grow en masse
and sadness withers like the grass.

From you, endearing gilded globe
clad in Isis’ radiant robe,
whispers of fancy, nightly reign
willing bared troubles, to wane.

Quaint ball of a celestial sphere,
you, who make the obscure air clear,
must, in due time with grief declare
this summer’s end, by your cold stare.

Still, you glow, albeit less nobly,
duty bound to, quite probably,
weaving dreams of summers to come -
nearby, waiting, past twilight’s glum.

The Glorietta Blast

The Glorietta Blast

Blast!

Why?

A question that remains
unanswered for many souls
now mourning, wailing
inconsolable in their grief

Who?

The victims, their family
want to know and face
to challenge, help ease
the pain in some fashion

When?

Soon, hearts hope
in a time of conflict
before many more
feels the pain of loss

And…

while dreams are dreamt
without borders or chains
and Peace still is within
our hearts reach and grasp
