Life

Malleates. Nullifies
ostentatious points. Questions
reason, sentiments tendered.
Unveils visions.
Wields xysters.
Yields zany and boisterous
characters. Discordant,
exacting. Frames golden
hour. Irks, jaded know-it-all.

Humble Sea Urchin

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Humble Sea UrchinEgg fertilized
Two, four to 64
(Two to the sixth power)
Cell to larvae in hours

Hedgehog creature
Of the ocean floor
Many a tube feet
No legs or hands, it seems

Feeding on algae
Preyed on by cousin starfish
Eaten by crabs, wolf eels
Snails and sea otters

Your roes, a must have
A delicacy in sushi-land
No eyes to shed tears
Just spines that leave a mark

Portrait of a Dream

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Portrait of a Dream

Silver-hued canvass
Bright, reflective, inviting
An adventurous ride
Of endless possibilities

Shelter cradling lonely souls
Home to listless roaming
Shadows filtered by dawn’s light
In reality marked

Rainbow gilded ancient art
Fortress of silent hopes
Pathway to wishes untold
Portrait of a dream?

This Christmas

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

This ChristmasGifts
and bright
colored lights
strung on a tree…
are just ornaments.
We should find more delight
from a much greater presence
not presents wrapped in shiny foil.
The birth of Christ Jesus, remember
and be humbled by God’s mercy and love!

Deliverance

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

Deliverancefrom soul-searching lines, remembered
stacks of scribbled notes on paper
painted words of thoughts and notions
promised to, written from the heart

collecting dust for years on end
just shoved inside drawers, under
beds and a number of boxes
waiting for the perfect moment

now released, finally dust-free
to all who dared to care, freely
shared. Flowing, steadfastly moving
poetry and promise fulfilled

Snowed In

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Snowed In

Poring over old recipes
As if mesmerized, put under
A lasting spell. Thinking fondly
Of hot soup, melting winter’s chill

Working fast and furiously
Slicing and dicing and chopping
Mixing flavors, getting warmed up
Chasing away, cold days ahead

The Things I Did In This Lifetime

Friday, December 14th, 2007

The Things I Did In This LifetimeThe walks in the rain and storm
Just listening and learning
Touching lives, in a manner
Mere words fail to describe

Discovering nature’s wonders
In plain sight for all to see
Rising from the rubbles
Of troubles and uncertainty

The meeting with ordinary folks
With extraordinary tales
Feeling their pain, their joy
Keeping it in one’s memory

Being able to share one’s gift
Being blessed beyond compare
These, I know and more are
Dreams, in reality fulfilled

As I write, am lost

Monday, December 10th, 2007

As I write, am lost

mixing phrases in a pinch
gilded in gold, inch by inch
brewing bottles of potions
mirrors of thoughts and notions

casting pearls, chasing shadows
with cupid’s own winged arrows
held fast, pure, by twilight’s youth
grains of wisdom, leis of truth

bemused, stuck, battling a wall
taming monsters, ten feet tall
handcuffed by noisy chatter
dancing with old grey matter

sifting thoughts, dark brew sipping
tossing words, pebble skipping
eyes on the noose, hung up high
as another day goes by

lost perhaps, still hard-wired
in poetry, inspired

Baking Zeb’s Bread

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Baking Zeb’s BreadNo wheat or barley or oats
No eggs or potatoes in any form
Avoid the nuts altogether
Use rice, bean, sorghum, tapioca

Try one mixture after the next
Compare the texture and the taste
Discover the versatility of
Arrowroot, flax meal and soda

Sift and measure, make a list
Keep the ones that seem to work
Mix one batch, try another
Discard those failed attempts

Again and again, over and over
A new mixture to mix and test
Until one that works is found
Obsessed with baking Zeb’s bread
