Illusion
Is it bright colored lights,
in a dark empty room?
Or black velvet nights
made to dispel the gloom?
Is it peals of laughter
coming from thin air?
Or a fly for a spider
trapped in its lair?
Perhaps it’s a way out
of such a terrible plight
Then again, maybe not
just a trick on one’s sight

Crucible
When I was little I thought
of small things and big dreams
I tried hard not to cry a lot
my pride forbid it so it seems
In dirt and soil I played
every bit of chance I could
I was not even all that afraid
danger was a game I understood
My dreams then were haunted
by shadows of death and strife
My soul stood tall, undaunted
hope instilled in my own life
Every death I was a witness to
in my mind’s eye, I saw a lesson
As dawn takes on a red orange hue
all sorrow and darkness lessen
For every heartache I encountered
in strength inside, I grew and grew
Terror felt from conflict fostered
a blurred memory of a time I knew
Now a grown woman, wife and mother
still a sister, daughter and friend
My life has been like any other
a crucible, I was made to contend

Restavek
Blistered and scarred young body
age five; face of an old soul
Tattered rags covered in filth
memories dimmed by anguish
Pained eyes masked in sweaty grime
serving a slavemaster’s whim
As death draws closer each day
freedom yearned: a dream unreal
Like a shadow in the dark
obscured, existing, ignored
Of tradition born, disguised
slave to a twisted system

Author’s Comments:
Restavek (also restavec) – In the poem refers to a Childslave. The word is derived from the French phrase “reste avec” meaning “to stay with”. It refers to a social system (some say tradition) in Haiti whereby parents unable to care for their children send them to relatives or strangers living in more urban areas where they are supposed to receive food and housing (and sometimes an education) in exchange for light housework. In reality, Restaveks often live in grinding poverty, enslaved to their “hosts” and rarely receiving an education. In most cases, when they are no longer able to work and/or are ill, they are abandoned or left to fend for themselves and/or die by their so called hosts.
Rain falls down…
hard on my bare head
oddly soothing to my heart
wetting my skin, the drops
splashing into puddles
as the sweat on my brow
dripping and flowing freely
become one with nature’s tears
swirls form into mirrored pools
a salve to the parched earth
opening up possibilities
rain falls down steadily
to quench my thirsting soul

Author’s Comments:
Rain falls for a reason, always. Whether it is to refresh the earth, grass, trees or us… or feed and quench a thirst….there’s a reason. When we get rained on, it is up to us, how we take it. Be like children and rejoice in the rain for the good it does or, see nothing but grey skies and dark clouds.
Ever notice how things seem to grow more after the rain? And how grass, seem to be greener? One can only hope and pray, that we take the times we get rained on and let it be a time to be refreshed, fed and grow in our faith and life.
Tomorrow waits
for a savior or a hero,
while storms and tornadoes
pop up like crop circles.
To try and soothe its ails
Nature has finally brewed up
quite a concoction. Floods,
typhoons and earthquakes,
just a hint and a warning.
What fury awaits all fools
who dare not heed the call.

Shadowplay
On a surface smooth, reflected
flickering under the light’s spell
light wraps around dark, forms a shell
casting shadows then projected

Mon Ami
You of radiant smile, a free, giving heart
sunlight that shone, in the rain, a dear friend
strong of purpose, gentle spirit, a part
of my life to remember without end
A bright eyed person that I could depend
to count on then when times were very hard
with thousands of miles between, to contend
your strength and true friendship somehow kept guard
So a better person I became, blessed
and more of a blessing because of you
your kindness in my heart and mind impressed
I somehow hope to share with others too
In my heart you will stay, always will be
a ray of sunshine that still shines in me

Childbirth
Gnashing of teeth as the pain comes
for a moment or two, a quiet steal
and then it builds and just builds
to a crescendo of fear and thrill
Push and push and then relax
body tuned in to some greater force
restless yet feeling new strength
drawn from a newfound hidden source
Minutes or hours may come to pass
Sometimes pain just racks the body
everything seems to be centered in
that area surrounding one’s belly
And when it happens, as it should
One more big push and then its done
A child is born, pain is forgotten
Safe in your arms, a new loved one
